CKDS was engaged by the client to transform and update an overgrown, outdated perennial garden, restore a previously planted hillside space, and create lush, low maintenance plantings and planters surrounding the pool area.

We took a naturalistic approach with a sense of balance and harmony with the surrounding environment. The new cutting garden consists of a well-planned layout of rectilinear planting beds that compliment the guest house axis and angles of the existing hedges. Wide DG Pathways, raised metal edging, Bespoke metal planters were incorporated for a more updated, clean look.

The new plantings consist of a mix of flowering shrubs and trees, low maintenance, pollinator and hummingbird friendly grasses and perennials. Several older varieties of roses, some no longer available, were relocated to create a small Rose Garden along a pathway to the tennis court.

A special feature of the new garden is the shady, sitting area that was created by relocating several large boulders on the property. It’s also a wonderful spot to rest garden tools and baskets for cut flowers.

The new hillside garden incorporates elements of the surrounding landscape, trees, and rolling hills creating a sense of continuity and restfulness. Grading of the hill was done to soften the slope and create a more naturalistic vista.

The large-scale planting of Seslaria Grass in field rows mimics the surrounding vineyards. Parrotia persica, Persian Ironwood, Trees punctuate the hill drawing your eye to the surrounding landscape and views.

A previously unused space outside of the primary bedroom was planted with white carpet roses and little ollies that results in a soft, calm, scented garden.

Pool area plantings include pittosporums, geranium, grasses, and arctostaphylos.
