After a complete interior and exterior renovation of a this 1950’s ranch style, in town home, the client’s interior designer reached out to Christine Krause Design Studio to create a design plan for outdoor living spaces and gardens to complement the newly updated home.

The clients are environmentally conscious and also keen to have low maintenance plantings. I suggested a lawn free front yard and they jumped at the idea. We filled the space with native shrubs, perennials, and grasses. Seven multi -stem, native Dogwoods anchor the space. The understory of grasses creates movement and winter interest, while the sedums and long blooming perennials.add textural contrast and balance.

At the back of the home, we created a bluestone terrace connecting both sets of interior French doors. “Panels” of river rock were added to break up the bluestone. The black stained, horizontal privacy fencing runs along both sides of the property. The Amelanchiar are up-lit at night for a dramatic evening effect. The planting in the back garden focused on an understory of shade shrubs and perennials, and native ferns.
