Outdoor Living Space in Red Hook, NY
This Contemporary, loft-style, hilltop home has amazing southwest facing views and beautiful mature gardens, but there was a lack of connection to the home and existing outdoor living spaces. Additionally, the existing terrace was inundated with an infestation of sand fleas beneath the stone and an unappealing, unused hot tub from the previous owner was taking up valuable space and blocking the views.
Christine Krause Design Studio was brought in to create a plan for a more unified space where the couple could relax - flea free - and relish in their views. The existing stone terracing and walls were removed, the fleas cleared, and the hot tub was taken out. A concrete planter was constructed to divide the space off of the Master bedroom for more privacy. A built in bench fashioned from the same sourced wood as the deck was built. The planter was filled with a mass planting of Pennisetum grass for year-round interest. New oak decking and expanded steps, an enlarged stone terrace and stone planters integrated all of the angles and levels of the house with these new outdoor elements. The new design created a seamless connection and flow among the deck, new terrace, and plantings.
“Our house was designed as a "loft in the country," and Christine very successfully extended its contemporary geometry into an enhanced outdoor space of stone terraces and planters, oak decking, and hearty plants. Her attention to the lines of the house and its relationship to the landscape, as well as her ability to balance utility with aesthetics, lift the house to new levels of beauty and enjoyment.”
